The toilet shaped house is named Hawoojae and is located in Suwon, South Korea. It was built in 2007 by the late mayor of Suwon, Sim Jae-Duck at a cost of $1.1 million. The 4,520-square-foot steel, concrete, and glass structure features a showcase, glass-walled bathroom; walls that turn opaque with the touch of a button. The home also features a roof-top balcony that’s accessible by a “toilet drain” staircase and equipped with rainwater harvesting technology.
Jae-Duck made it his life’s work to advocate for worldwide clean, efficient, and working sanitation and, in 2007, the South Korean sanitation activists launched the global toilet association by symbolically lifting the lid on the lavatory-shaped home. This association, as was Jae-Duck, is dedicated to providing clean sanitation to the more than 2.5 billion people who live without toilets.
Haewoojae, in Korean, signifies “a place of sanctuary where one can solve one’s worries”
